Sports Injuries and the Mind of the Athlete
In addition to over 30 years of clinical experience, Dr. Berkoff is an endurance athlete who has competed in numerous local, national, and international triathlons and marathons. During high school, college, graduate school, and beyond, he has competed in sports including: swimming, distance running, sprinting, pole vault, ice hockey, golf, American boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing, and Aikido. He has personally experienced both acute and chronic injuries during the course of his ongoing athletic life and understands the minds and special needs of competitive athletes. He has helped injured runners complete marathons the next day, professional athletes overcome chronic conditions, and hundreds of swimmers, runners, golfers, tennis players, and other active patients improve their training and technique to elevate their games and avoid injuries or recurrences.

Dr. Berkoff has specialized training in Natural Running Technique and Qi Running, and dedicates a significant part of his practice to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and leg, including the making of custom orthotics. Over the years he has learned through experience that many of our patients' problems can be resolved with simple measures like improving running form, adjusting bike position, or the fabrication of custom orthotics, and without the need for extensive ongoing office treatments. It is our goal to have every patient meet his or her goal in the shortest amount of time and with the least expense.
Each sport has its own unique joys and risks. Understanding the biomechanics of your sport is one of the keys to fast and complete recovery as well as injury prevention and improved performance. Have you ever trained in cardiac zones? Are the muscles you are using to pitch a baseball or serve a tennis ball firing in the right sequence? Has your bike been properly fit to your body? Many of our patients come to us having abandoned basketball, running, or another sport that they love because a doctor told them their only options were to quit or become disabled. Few things give our doctor more joy than getting an athlete back to the sport he or she loves, safely and injury-free.
