What a Hassle! What Do I Do Now?
At our conveniently located University City (UTC)/La Jolla clinic we understand that patients who have been injured in motor vehicle accidents have special needs. In addition to the pain associated with whiplash and back trauma, the stress and hassle of dealing with auto repair shops, insurance companies, making doctor visits, and mounting medical bills all create an environment of tension which works against healing and recovery. Many of our patients find after an auto accident they begin to have problems sleeping, or experience fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or trouble performing work activities effectively. Dr. Berkoff has developed deep awareness and understanding of these issues and how they impact your recovery and your auto case. After more than two decades in the same La Jolla/UTC neighborhood, we have built a network of the best and most dedicated health care providers to aid the process of alleviating pain, relieving stress and returning you to full health. Should I see my primary care doctor first? Do I need X-rays? Should I consult a lawyer? We have 25 years of experience dealing with every facet of your situation and from the moment you call our UTC office we will begin the process of guiding you through the maze of Auto-Accident Injury issues and do all that we can to remove from your shoulders the added burden of post-accident stress.

Auto Accident Injuries Are Unlike Other Injuries
Cars and trucks are big and heavy and are capable not only of high rates of speed but of sudden acceleration and deceleration. When you are at a stop with your body at rest and your vehicle is hit, the force of impact is transmitted through the colliding vehicles to your body causing sudden acceleration of your head, neck, back, and limbs, often at rates twice that of the cars themselves. A rear-end collision at 10 mph is capable of generating enough force to cause your body to move with a sudden jolt at up to 20 mph, and this acceleration (from rest to 20 mph) takes place in less than half a second! Sudden changes in speed (acceleration and deceleration) are what cause the unique damage characteristics to muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints typically seen following auto accidents, and account for why–even following relatively small accidents–it is common for people to sustain significant whiplash and back injuries despite there being little damage to the cars involved. Insurance claims adjusters are quick to categorize low speed accidents as 'minor,' and to inform you that, according to their analysis of the accident, you should not or could not have been injured. But a mountain of scientific data shows otherwise. Keep in mind that Insurance Claims Adjusters have virtually no training or education in the diagnosis and treatment of human ailments. Their opinions on that subject are informed by an agenda not by medical knowledge or clinical experience. If you have pain, stiffness, numbness, weakness, tingling, headaches, difficulty concentrating, anxiety while driving or any other new symptoms (or an exacerbation of pre-existing symptoms) following a motor vehicle accident, it is in your best interest to be evaluated and, if appropriate, receive the very best treatment as soon as possible. Waiting can complicate your recovery and your claim.
A Note About Insurance in Auto Injury Cases
Med-Pay is a provision in auto insurance policies which covers you and anyone in your car for bodily injuries sustained during a motor vehicle accident. Med-Pay fully covers you for appropriate care regardless of who was at fault in the accident. If you do not have Med-Pay coverage, you may be able to use private insurance or be seen on lien (in which case your medical treatment is paid for after you have completed treatment out of the settlement of your claim). Our Front office manager, can help you determine whether or not you have Med-Pay coverage and walk you through your various options. She is always happy to speak with you to answer any questions you may have.
